Officer and Gentleman
Created for the Chido Johnson "Love Library" show in St. Louis, artists were asked to react to the genre of the romance novel, either by creating their own or altering an existing one.
Using a found historical romance novel as a jumping off point, I transformed the main female character into a man. The result is not a simple substitution of the central heterosexual romance with a homosexual one (Lord Ellsworth, in fact, still has breasts and likes to wear gowns…).
Rather, the grammatical and narrative structure of the original text is altered to a point where language and gender become devices of disorientation in the re-reading. It is unfamiliar territory and, as such, closer to real love in my book.
